Hurricane, Storm and minimalistic architecture
Yeah the hurricane nearly hit us here at the Caribbean paradise island of Roatan and thankfully the Sara as they call it, moved towards the mainland and spare us the havoc and disaster of mother earth weather revenge. Who know if it is really mother Earth revenge but, certainly it is more frequent occurrence of the bad, better said disastrous weather in recent years. Snow is no longer regular sight at winter, sun is either too hot or you don’t see it at all in the summer.
Well as someone wise once said there is nothing GOOD or BAD per say, it just is, what it is. Maybe sometimes the forced disconnection from the fast modern world into the natural rhythm of life based on the sun and moon, instead of blue light from the screens will do us good. Hurricane now tropical storm thank God for that change hit us just with a lot of rain and high winds but still not as high as it was expected. That little detour to touch main land took a force out for Sara and now it just become tropical storm teenager instead of bat shit crazy hurricane.
When the power goes out the silence is only interrupted by sound of generators if they are near but generally, not many around so it is silence and darkness enveloping the island, especially after sunset. No longer the noisy music from the bars with the street lights as well as the lights and noises of the cars and motorbike shuffling people to and from the bars.
It gets more tranquil and more serene I would say and now is time for the old fashion music from Mp3 storage, not like the new generation of streamers as without power and internet the streaming is no longer an option. Remember now when I was asked why I’m buying the music when I can stream anything, anywhere, well this is the case where I can sit down with my headphones on and listen to music. Yea the storm rain is a quite noisy neighbor, one could not believe how noisy a tropical storm is, especially if all around are only houses with corrugated steel roofs. Cacophony of drums beating by best drummer in the world, tropical rain. Here the modern science and invention of noise cancelling headphones comes handy as when listening to the music, you don’t want to be disrupted. Yeah after listening to the good drum solo for few minutes I prefer piano of nice jazz to compliment the scenery.
Such a experience when, there is no electricity, no internet, no lights on the street or in case in your house just realization how sharp the home furniture is when you kick your foot into table chair or skirting board or when you hit your shin or knee into the chair. Who the feck tested those pieces of torture before selling them to unaware public. Sure some people might pull up the lanterns, candles and any other possible source of light but it is more fun when you just trying to get around your house without any source of light. Well if you have a big ish family, you can navigate by sounds, curses of the family members, who bravely decided to take walk through obstacle course on trip from living room to kitchen or toilet as when the lights are off, one can snack in dark, without being seen.
Yes the occasional grunt or swear word will expose such a fool but we as humas are really challenge driven creatures and competition is on when the weakest link just stay in bed or on the sofa. However when one brave soul decide to undertake such a tremendous task as to get into kitchen in dark, usually the words ‘well if you going’ are heard almost immediately. From pure politeness this hero answer to such preposition, ‘yeah what you want’ and with determination of bull fighting toreador, try dance between the obstacles that immediately cease to have any purpose at all, except inflict pain. Why the F%&K did we get a steel and glass coffee table or those free standing drawers with plant on top of them, not to mention the skirting board with razor blades on each corner.
Now I understand the minimalistic architecture, it was not an art form or design of lazy person, who did not want to have too much thing to paint, clear and generally have to upkeep them. No it was an architect in the house with all those fancy furniture pieces and skirtings and steel, glass thingies, who walk around in black out and came back as soldier from a war, full of injuries and swearing on full mouth as if he was in a sailors pub after happy hour. Then the inspiration came as usual from his calm wife just laying in the bed after his return from battle field house with the usual words ‘I told you so’ Hence the minimalistic architecture was born from pure necessity to be able never hear those words again.
