Another day in paradise. This time helping clean it.
Bro no need to read this, it is only about manual labor and that is not for educated people like you.
Another day in paradise as they say, sometimes it sounds like cliché but it is true, this is another paradise in paradise but even paradise needs to be tidy up / clean up as every place on the earth sometimes needs it due the waste we human accumulate during our life time. Here the dive community created Earth Day / Land clean up day, what means that each diver on island will take waste bags, plastic gloves and go on the street to picking up the rubbish laying by the side of the roads in the morning and underwater in afternoon. It is amazing activity and thank to the people who came up with this idea as it is important to give back to community / earth since most of us do not even think of earth when purchasing the drink and we get plastic straw with it…. Or plastic bag at shop with our shopping. It is convenience life we are living now as everything is conveniently packed and we just obeying the habits. Comfort and easiness of this consumer life took over of the common sense and maybe a thinking about future, future of our children who might grow up to the completely different world as we know it now and maybe instead of voluntarily watching the documentary of Blue Planet series at rainy evening, they might use it as history lessons in school to learn about the history of planet, what was fucked up by their parents and grandparents. This morning the groups of divers across island started at 9:00 at various locations to pick up the waste / trash / rubbish “for international readers” 😊 to clean the island a bit and make it more beautiful. For some reason “what is beyond my comprehension” I was made a local liaison person for the street where hostel is located where Dive Master Trainee are staying and while we are not diving we still part of excellent community who knows how to treat our precious blue planet with respect since we are seen the damage done in far far away areas in the ocean right here. Well since the hostel is great and people in it as family Frida created FB page where we can contact each other for dinner or any event where friends are welcome and since I resisted to join FB until now “yes I joined FB doh” I had decided to use the social media for advertising this action . activity and seen what the social media can really do…. Well they in my realization did nothing as everyone like, share, comments but when it comes to pull sleeves and do some manual real work no one showed up from the people who “liked” the event article. So morning came and only three of us were on the road starting to picking up waste as no one else was there and I can tell you that I have a respect for local builders who are hard working on building some new buildings, welding, tiling, poring concrete etc as when you start manually working in Thai summer you realize true meaning of “sweat rolling” words since I had to take off my sunglasses since they were flooded by my own sweat falling of the forehead waterfall 😊 We tackle our street from the sea side up to the T junction on the top and had few bags of rubbish and we could easily have more since there is really hard to distinguish where is the demarcation line between the public and private area since the rubbish does not respect ay boundaries and it is congregate at every location. We were in middle of the street when some official personnel in uniform and two others came on the scooters and ask us to take photo together what seems to me like joke in the moment since I was literally drowning in my own sweat trying to clean the side of the street as much as I can and was not in mood to pose for some photo on FB. Anyhow the lady on the second scooter was translating to the official as far as I overheard her conversation with Thomas in English and then saying something in Thai to the official. Also the local people were bringing us water “ironically in plastic bottles” what was really appreciated since the heat of Thai summer makes you thirsty for sure. As much as we had water with us from the water cooler in the hostel the water in water coolers is just rain water without any minerals and salts so you need to buy the sports salts drink or if you feel like save some money and eat less sugar that you can get hundred percent orange juice “not form concentrate” and put in sea salt and you have similar thing but without added sugar. As we were continue up the road I had to few times kick Blue Thunder into live and drove to get more bags, gloves since I was not in mood to carry 80 bags with me in this heat and as much as I was planning to sell Blue Thunder I think I will keep it for a while as when the heat is here the ride is cooling me a bit at least. After one drive for plastic bags, some local guy on the scoter passed us and node on us as well done and in few minutes returned to us with more plastic bags. No later than maybe 5 min local lady came to us with more cold water as refreshment. It is so nice to see that people are still nice and helpful and appreciative. I cannot say I was not disappointed with “likes” FB friends but maybe they were collecting waste somewhere else on the island so they just “like” my post but I still think that it is a superficial to “like” something on the social media and then do nothing, opposite of trolling and abuse. Well we had reached the top of the road in smelting heat of the day a t 10:30 ish and since we left bags behind us, the reliable Blue Thunder now acted as waste collection truck with Thomas using his French baguette, cheese muscles to pick and hold waste bags while I was trying to steer towards collection point, not to lose him, when accelerating since his hands were busy holding bags instead of my fat big belly. Well few trips up and down the road and to the collection point and we were bag free, while the other group started bringing them to the collection point so we aimed our waste collection truck towards them, when Thomas started picking up the bags they nearly went into Viking mode to defend their treasure so we had to use communication skills to explain them that we are not in treasure hunt but trying to help them bring bags to the collection point with use of French muscles and Japanese technology “Blue Thunder is Honda” 😊 So all trash collected and weighted and we were in need of shower but since there was not raining since January the water is precious “maybe more than Golum’s ring” and therefore the shower is limited only between 18:00 and 8:00 i.e in the evening, night and early morning, thank God for that but that is mean that shower will happen only after whole day sweating. Well since the heat took a lot of my energy and since I started again my Monday fasting I took day off from the diving, to prepare my precious temple “my body” for returning to healthy habits again such as fasting and exercising. Well the view from my present office where I type this is amazing and sometimes I need to pinch myself to realize that it is not a dream but reality and I think that once you live such life it is hard to come back to Europe or land based country, especially if you want to dive and make money by diving. Time is here now to get a break from typing and just gazing on the ocean and think of nothing. Gentle breeze flowing on shore from the ocean, refreshingly nice in this heat, moving the PADI blue flag and palm leaves, together with my sleeveless vest as if playful child of wind God is having a play day. Hope that this wind will bring also some rain as the clouds what were earlier above are now gone and rain is much needed for the water as well as for relieving from the heat. Well packing now as I have new duties as dog walker / feeder to keep company to lovely Labrador Roxy 😊
